Lawsuit Lovers

If you haven't heard, pop singer Brandy was involved in a deadly accident back in December. The D.A. has recommended that charges for manslaughter be filed against Brandy due to her reckless driving leading towards the death.
Well surprise surprise, today the family of the person killed filed a $50 million dollar lawsuit against Brandy. Seems that someone is out for money to help them get over their loss.

My question is if Brandy wasn't famous and instead was a hairdresser making $20,000 a year, would the family have then sued? I doubt it. But once they heard a rich, famous person was involved they decided they wanted some of her money.

Brandy may have been responsible but why can't the legal system take care of it. Why does she also have to pay the family??
