Here's a good article arguing that the closer position is the most overrated in baseball. I've been arguing this for years. Why is a guy paid millions to come in for one inning and get three guys out with no one on base to start the inning?
I think the relievers that come in with guys on base in the 7th or 8th inning are more valuable. They actually have to deal with pressure.
Most of the time when these closers come in earlier than the 9th inning they can't get guys out or they can't pitch more than one inning!
